Little M Gets Big

A week or so ago I noticed that Little M was trying to escape out of the crib.  I figured it was time for him to transition into his big boy bed.  Since I didn't want to buy some "cheap" toddler bed that would barely get him through the toddler bed years, I decided to build one, using Ana's plans from Knock Off Wood.  This is the Farmhouse bed, toddler sized, but of course to Little M - it's a big boy bed.

I used China Red stain from MinWax.  I also distressed it a little bit by rubbing the edges with my trusty sanding block.  All poplar, so it was a little more expensive than if I had used common boards, but I loved the grain in the poplar.  Not to mention, I think this bed will last through quite a few toddlers - not just Little M.

And speaking of the little devil, I couldn't get him out of the bed long enough to take pictures.  He seriously refused to budge.  So, we put the sheets and stuff on it and let him veg out in the living room while we took apart the crib.

I think he likes it.

WOW!!! It's gorgeous. I'm very impressed. I'll bet you have a blast creating the furniture - and then making a quilt for it too... way fun!

The bed turned out AWESOME! Wow. I'm still on my first KOW project... I haven't worked on it in weeks. :( Cold weather scared me off. I'll get on it soon.

So I can't quite remember how I stumbled onto your blog, Ana maybe....but I totally get you!:) I have an insatiable appetite for sewing, quilting mostly. I don't post my stuff too much because I get embarrassed, silly right? But I really loved your post when you said "Did I say that I was going to clean..." I feel like I say that everyday right before I get sidetracked by a project. I'll have to keep checking in. Good to "meet" you.

Love how your bed turned out! I'm just finishing up the same bed but in pine. I was wondering if you had any problems getting the crib mattress to fit as far as the width goes?

I found you via Knock Off Wood, and I just have to ask: where in the world did you find Dr. Seuss bedding? I've looked everywhere and can't find it. Absolutely adorable quilt and fantastic bed!

Love the quilt and the bed. Just wondering, do you know the measurements you used to the toddler bed? I saw this post via Knock Off Wood and would love to make this for my almost 2 yr old, but am not good with adapting plans. Thanks

I followed Ana's plans to the "T", which probably was a mistake on my part because our crib mattress was exactly 1/2" too wide. We had to buy a new mattress that I could squish into the bed ... which was okay since I have a friend who's going to borrow the other mattress.

My suggestion would be to measure your crib mattress and adjust the opening to the width of your mattress.

I found you through Ana's site and came to your blog because of this quilt! Love, love, love it! I have three grandkids that I'm going to be making quilts for soon, if I can just stay focused long enough (too many creative ideas bouncing around in my little brain!) I love your writing too! Sending a smile, Chris
